Through examples of works Jana has done recently she will share experiences, stories and thoughts around listening, recording and multichannel sound installation works.
WIth the title Listening With, Jana means listening with the environment, being in it and part of it. Our ears and brain are brilliant for detecting sounds in air, our hearing ability, including our bodies is fully alert to sound all the time. We can use technology to listen and to amplify sounds that we are not able to pick up with our perception, and from places it is not easy to access. We can stretch our ears deep into the ocean with ROVs or cables. You can reach into inaudible areas of the spectrum with bat detector and microphones that can record into Ultrasound range, also underwater with hydrophones. Right outside where you live there is creatures that are very well aware of you, but do we really listen to the neighbour magpie or badger and the complexity of their for us audible communication?
